Joe Arpaio’s Law

Apparently the obvious slipped through the trenches of the brains of Arizonans and out of their skulls because it doesn’t take much thought to realize an overbearing, offensive police force makes the populace distrustful of the police and that, in turn, leads to lawlessness. The world is laughing at Maricopa County, home of The Asshole King, Sheriff Arpaio, for seeing its violent crimes go up while the rest of the state’s violent crime numbers drop. What Arizona doesn’t get is making the entire state just like Maricopa County is a very simple process:

  1. Police go crazy and start busting people left and right for picking their noses, navel gazing or having a slightly darker tan (a.ka. Mexican).
  2. Victims become reluctant to report crimes because the police are thought to be a bunch of assholes and it’s easier to put up with rape and violent beatings than deal with them.
  3. Criminals and those on the edge of being criminals decide they’ll probably get away with their crime because of this so they do it fearlessly.
  4. Crime explodes and those willing to call the Asshole King, Sheriff Arpaio, to complain about being shot in the stomach do actually report some violence.
  5. Asshole King, Sheriff Arpaio throws the victim in jail for being dark skinned and the gunman gets away because he was just making sure the darkie was a U.S. Citizen and bled blue blood.

What could Arizona do to replicate this distrust in police? Oh, why, there’s always SB1070, the anti-immigrant law that the Arizona government passed recently which will require law enforcement officers to put the boot to the neck of anyone that might look suspiciously like an illegal resident. A lot of people are bitching about this law, and with good reason.

Who constitutes these alarmists? A range of folks including police associations, faith based groups, immigration right leaders, and leading civil rights groups. Of these, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, the Anti-Defamation League, the NAACP and Mexican American Legal Defense & Educational Fund have come together to denounce the bill, calling it out for making racial profiling the standard and undermining effective community policing by creating distrust between law enforcement and communities of color.

Oh lookie there! SB1070 might instill fear and distrust in the general populace—maybe even fear of speaking to police about any possible crimes because they don’t want to be harassed about whether they’re in Arizona legally while they gush out blood and bile from a gunshot wound to the stomach? No, that’s silly. Maybe.

The thing is, though, this is the reality and the very likelihood of Arizona becoming Maricopa County is very real. Here are the facts:

7-17-2010 10-15-32 PM

Those findings alone suggest that the systemic violence often cited as the compelling argument for stricter border laws may be overblown.

But the more telling number may be the crime statistics for the portion of Maricopa County that is under the purview of controversial Sheriff Joe Arpaio. According to data compiled by America’s Voice, crime in that area has actually increased 58 percent since 2002.

Arpaio is considered something of a visionary among conservatives with respect to his approach to immigration. Many of his reforms, indeed, have served as a basis for the law that Gov. Jan Brewer tried to implement statewide. But he has clashed with other sheriffs over his methods, with some complaining that such broad anti-immigration policies put an overwhelming burden on law enforcement officials while producing social friction rather than safety.

Good luck with that, Arizona.

To make matters worse, it seems like Arizona might become the Nazi capital of the US, attracting a bunch of actual Nazi sympathizers to the border. GottaLaff tells us the story:

Jason “J.T.” Ready is a neo-Nazi who happens to be an ex-Marine. He sounds like such a reasonable guy, I can’t imagine why the Border Patrol would object to his antics:

But local law enforcement are nervous given that Ready’s group is heavily armed and identifies with the National Socialist Movement, an organization that believes only non-Jewish, White heterosexuals should be American citizens and that everyone who isn’t White should leave the country “peacefully or by force.”

“We’re not going to sit around and wait for the government anymore,” Ready said. “This is what our founding fathers did.”

Oh really, “J.T.”? Our founding fathers grabbed their muskets and went after anyone who wasn’t a non-Jewish, straight, white, Glenn Beck lookalike? Of course, that leaves Agent Orange McBoehner types out in the cold, but that’s another story for another time.

Wonderful! From the Arizona paper:

He and his friends are outfitted with military fatigues, body armor and gas masks, and carry assault rifles. Ready takes offense at the term “neo-Nazi,” but admits he identifies with the National Socialist Movement.

Law enforcement officials said patrols like Ready’s could undercut the work of the thousands of officers on duty every day across the border, especially if they try to enforce the law themselves in carrying out vigilante justice.

Like I said: Good luck with that, Maricopa State.
