Journalism and Opinion
Writing opinion about politics and public policy is a very different skill than reporting. The almost-uniform rule of political reporters-turned-columnists is that they’re awful at it. They have no idea how to construct a persuasive argument or marshal the kinds of evidence they need to make their case. Usually, their argument relies on authority — I am asserting opinion X and you should believe me because I am a prestigious veteran reporter.
